Francisco Peña says he is tired of living in a construction zone.“This is the mess they have left there,” says Peña.It all started in 2017 when he signed a $21,000+ contract with Home Depot to have a new roof installed.“The experience has been horrible.I have been suffering for two years, approximately 20 months,” says Peña.And not just because the company didn't finish the project, but because of the damage he claims they caused when they removed the old roof and didn't adequately protect his house from storms.Steve Rice in Hollywood says his experience with Home Depot has been similar. He says the workers also removed his old roof, leaving it partially exposed.Although Home Depot compensated the family for those damages, Rice is not satisfied that he still does not have his new roof even though he signed a $30,000 contract with the company a year ago."Honestly, the only thing they've done on time is collect payments," says Rice.Home Depot says the delays have been due to a shortage of workers and products such as shingles. The company said in a statement that “last year's storms created strong demand for roofing and labor, which is not unique to Home Depot. This is not the experience that customers should have and that is one of the reasons why we are ceasing our roofing business and focusing on programs where we can offer a better experience.”"I wouldn't say that's normal," says John Chase, the vice president of the South Florida Roofing Contractors Association, referring to the one-year delays.Chase says in our area rather, the usual is two to three months. He says the material and labor shortages reported after Hurricane Irma have dissipated. After we contacted Home Depot, the company offered to pay Peña back what he paid for the roof or finish the job for him quickly at a reduced price. He chose the refund."I think I'm seeing a ray of light," Peña says.As for Rice, a representative told us that they expect to finish their roof in the first week of April.Something he looks forward to.Home Depot says they will finish all the roofing they started unless the customer asks for a refund like Peña did.The company says it will consider all such requests.Home Depot is also discontinuing other services they offer—like installing insulation and gutters.
