Penn Museum: will unveil its Eastern Mediterranean Gallery: Crossroads of Cultures, November 19, the revealing how innovations rooted in this diverse region still impact the world today—from the alphabet to the origins of Judaism, Islam, and Christianity. For more than 4,000 years, the region that now encompasses Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, the Palestinian Territories, and Cyprus has been a nexus where priests, merchants, armies, and immigrants created a cosmopolitan culture with global significance. The reimagined signature gallery will uncover the area’s remarkable technological innovation, as well as the personal stories of its people, with nearly 400 artifacts from the Middle Bronze Age (2,000 to 1,200 BCE) through the Ottoman Period (1299 to 1922 CE). Co-curated by Dr. Lauren Ristvet, Dr. Virginia Herrmann, Dr. Joanna Smith, and Eric Hubbard, a Ph.D. candidate in the Anthropology Department at Penn, the gallery aims to dispel popular misconceptions that this region has been defined only by conflict. The Penn Museum is open Tuesday–Sunday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. The Café is open Tuesday–Saturday, 10 a.m.–2 p.m. For more information, visit www.penn.museum, call 215.898.4000, or follow @PennMuseum on social media.

Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University: The River Feeds Back, June 1- Oct. 30, free with regular museum admission. A new project commissioned by the Academy is created by collaborating artists Annea Lockwood, known for her explorations of the rich world of natural acoustic sounds and environments, and Liz Phillips, who combines audio and visual forms with new technologies to create interactive experiences. The enchanting soundscape for The River Feeds Back was recorded at Pennsylvania sites along 135 miles of the Schuylkill River, from its headwaters to its mouth, as well as its tributaries including Tulpehocken Creek, French Creek and Wissahickon Creek. Lockwood and Phillips have composed a layered sound map that captures glimpses of the river system above and below its surface, including the underwater life of aquatic insects, eels, fish and swirling currents. Participants will experience this dynamic sound work through a variety of listening portals spatially arranged throughout the Academy’s Dietrich Gallery. Benches, hollowed tree trunks, and pieces of slate embedded with transducers (devices that translate electronic signals to sound waves of varying frequencies, some below the range of human hearing) will provide a visceral experience of the river and transport listeners to the subaquatic worlds of the Schuylkill. A wooden table etched with a contour map will pinpoint the artists’ recording sites along the Schuylkill’s riverbanks in a tactile form.
