Run or walk for The Cove

Liberty Bell High School sophomore Aksel Thomson has organized a community fun run and walk this weekend to help The Cove food bank. The event, which includes a 5-kilometer race and the option to run or walk at leisure, is open to everyone. Instead of a registration fee, participants are asked to bring non-perishable food for the Cove. Businesses have donated prizes for winners. The fun run/walk is Saturday (May 21), at the cross-country course at the high school. Registration is at 9 a.m.; the race starts at 10.

The next Methow Recycles Repair Café — which offers free fixes for items in distress — will be on Saturday (May 21), from 10 a.m. – noon in The Cove parking lot on Glover Street. Items must be small enough to carry and not leaking fluids, or be hazardous in any way. You must stay with your item while it is being repaired. Bring necessary parts to complete repairs. Little Star School will host its Spring Fling, a 40th anniversary celebration and fundraiser, on Sunday (May 22) from 2 – 5 p.m. at Mack Lloyd Park in Winthrop. Admission is free. The day will include live music by The Family Dog, a raffle, photo displays, food by Saskatoon Kitchens and Taco Bahia, a beer garden by Old Schoolhouse Brewery, family activities, and performances by Little Star students. Little Star hopes to raise $40,000 in donations, which will be matched by an anonymous donor.

The American Legion Auxiliary will, weather permitting, be placing the American flag and swags on veterans’ graves at Beaver Creek Cemetery on Thursday, May 26, at 9 a.m., and on the veterans’ graves at Sullivan Cemetery in Winthrop on Friday, May 27, at 9 a.m. On Memorial Day, Monday, May 30, at 11 a.m. there will be a short ceremony at Sullivan Cemetery. The public is welcome to attend all events.

The Methow Housing Trust will celebrate its recently launched capital campaign to “Build Belonging” in the valley with a free block party at TwispWorks on Saturday, May 28, 4 – 7 p.m., including yard games, music, food and brews and information. Twisp Eagles will host a plant sale to raise money for its scholarship program on May 28 from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. at 205 Highway 20. Offerings include vegetable starts, tomatoes, peppers and other vegetables, flowers and herbs. All proceeds go to scholarships for local graduates.

Mazama pancake breakfast is back

After a pandemic hiatus, the World Famous Mazama Pancake Breakfast returns on Saturday, May 28, from 8 – 11:30 a.m. at the Mazama Community Club. The all-you-can eat breakfast include pancakes with real maple syrup, ham, eggs, fresh fruit, juice, coffee or tea. Cost is $10 for adults. Kids under 6 eat Free. Cash or checks only. Seating is indoors, outdoors and under Red’s Shed (the new picnic shelter).

A fun run will start at 9 a.m. Meet at the Methow Trails kiosk in Mazama. The kids’ course is about 1 kilometer; the adult course is 5 miles. There is no fee or advanced registration.

Also, Methow Trails will have “Ginger” the Mazama Pisten Bulley grooming machine available to check out. Okanogan County Fire District 6 will have a fire truck on display. The pickleball court will be open.
