The City of Oakland opened a secure parking lot for 41 mobile homes in the city's Fruitvale district on Monday.Located at 615 High St., adjacent to a Home Depot, it is the third location the city has opened to serve the growing number of people living in mobile homes due to the high cost of housing in Oakland.Authorities reported that the new site will be staffed 24 hours a day and will have security, electricity, potable water, portable toilets, weekly shower service, garbage service, limited parking for passenger vehicles and the opportunity for participants to bring their pets. .The City said the space is designed to serve any unsheltered resident over the age of 18 who currently resides in an RV in the community of East 8th Street and Alameda Avenue next to the Home Depot. The site will be managed and operated by the East Bay Housing Trust, which also operates another RV park located on 71st Avenue in East Oakland, across from the Coliseum BART station and the Lake Merritt Community Cottages.Officials said the design and intent of the RV Safe Parking program is to promote and protect a safe and healthy community that considers the different needs, preferences and lifestyles of its residents and honors people's personal choices, as well as as well-being of the community. They added that participation is voluntary and that participants can safely live off the streets in their vehicles with sanitation and security while working towards self-sufficiency.
